The court issued an arrest warrant for the former president of Suriname,
South America, who went into hiding after being sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder.
Suriname police announced on the 17th (local time) that they had received an arrest warrant from the court to secure the identity of former President Desi Bauterseo (78),
who disappeared after being sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of 15 people, including opposition politicians.
On this day, the Suriname police posted a document on along with a photo of former President Bauter, saying,
“If anyone has witnessed the above person, please report it to the nearest police station.”
Former President Bouterse, who was tried without detention, previously expressed his intention to “voluntarily appear before the execution authorities”
following the Supreme Court ruling in December of last year, but did not appear until the deadline of the 12th, AFP reported.

Former President Wouterser took power in a bloody military coup in 1980. Two years later, in December 1982, he kidnapped and tortured 16 anti-government figures,
including lawyers, journalists, university professors, and businessmen, and imprisoned 15 of them in the capital, Para. He was accused and found guilty of murder in the old fortress of Maribo.
He resigned from power in 1987 due to pressure from the international community, but soon after went through a second coup and repeated elections, serving as president until 2020.
In Suriname, which has a population of about 600,000, former President Bauterseo is said to be securing a base of support mainly among the poor. Last week, some citizens gathered near the former president’s home in Wauters and expressed their solidarity by singing songs, AFP reported.
