Spanish Primera Liga side Sevilla FC is interested in loaning Hannibal Mebry (Manchester United).
“Sevilla are interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mebry on loan,” Spanish media outlet Diario de Sevilla reported on Saturday (ET).
This season, Sevilla have been at their worst. After winning the UEFA Europa League in the 2019-2020 and 2022-2023 seasons, they were crowned the “King of Europa,” but this season they finished 16th in the Spanish Primera Liga.
If they slip up, relegation to the second division is inevitable. Sevilla is in 16th place with 16 points from three wins, seven draws, and nine losses through 19 rounds, just one point behind 18th-place Cadiz CF, who will be relegated. They are tied on points with 17th-place Celta Vigo, which could drop into the relegation zone at any time.
Sevilla are determined to make a late-season comeback with winter signings. Sevilla president José María Carrasco has said that the club will try to be aggressive in the January transfer window. In particular, Sevilla are looking to strengthen their midfield.
One of the players Sevilla are targeting is United’s top prospect, Hannibal Mebry. ”Hannibal Mebry is one of the options Sevilla are negotiating,” Diario de Sevilla reported.
Mebry is a Tunisian international midfielder. He began his career with Paris FC in the French Ligue 2 before excelling with the French U-16 national team and moving to Ligue 1 side AS Monaco. After falling out with Monaco, Mebry joined United in July 2019 for a fee of €9 million.
Mevry made his first-team debut in the 2020-2021 season, coming on as a substitute in the English Premier League final against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He continued to show promise the following season, making two appearances in the Premier League.
Last season, Mebry went on loan to Birmingham City in the English Championship (second tier), where he received a lot of playing time. He scored his first professional goal against West Bromwich in February of last year and finished with one goal and six assists in 41 games.
This season, Mabry has been given a lot of playing time since returning to United. At the start of the season, United manager Eric ten Haggis gave Mevry a chance after the club lost key midfielders like Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount and Casemiro to injury.
Mevry lived up to expectations, scoring his debut goal for United against Brighton & Hove Albion (5R). United and Van Gaal saw the potential in Mevry and triggered the option to extend his contract by one year. Mevry is now tied to Old Trafford until 2025.
If Mbappe were to leave on loan to Sevilla, he would not have an outright purchase option. United have already extended Mevry’s contract through 2025, and they’re showing that they don’t want to lose him to another team by re-signing him.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility that United will turn him down. Eriksen, Martial, and Casemiro have recently returned to training, but the Red Devils have been plagued by injuries this season. The deal could drag on until the end of January.
